Contracts Approved for Architectural, Other Services for Three Centers
The Dayton City Commission has approved two contracts representing an initial investment of nearly $1 million to build and upgrade neighborhood recreational facilities, including development of an all-new Rec Plex facility and major enhancements at two existing centers.
Approving the contracts is a significant step in realizing the City Commission's commitment to expand recreation resources for Dayton residents, as outlined in the 10-year master plan for the Department of Recreation and Youth Services.
These agreements mark real progress toward more and better recreation opportunities for our residents and also for enhanced quality of life in the community, said City Commissioner Joey Williams, who has been a lead proponent of the Rec Plex idea and for enhancing recreational opportunities in Dayton. First-class recreation centers support neighborhood vitality and positive activities for youth and families. We are very pleased to take this step forward in our overall master planning effort.
At its weekly meeting today, the City Commission approved two contracts associated with the recreational enhancements. The first item is an $820,000 contract with Lorenz & Williams, a leading design and architecture firm. Lorenz & Williams will provide initial architectural and engineering services for the proposed Rec Plex facility at 2013 W. Third Street. This state-of-the art facility would be co-located next to the previously announced Dayton Public Schools Boys Academy at the site now occupied by the Roosevelt Center. With an estimated completion date of November 2009, the Rec Plex will be a 50,000-sq.-ft. recreation center with extensive athletic, aquatic and leisure facilities and programs. Lorenz and Williams' scope of work entails developing schematic designs for the site, providing detailed design elements that will help in preparing actual construction documents, coordinating future bid and plan approval processes, and construction administration.
In related action, the City Commission approved a $135,000 contract with Brandstetter Carroll, a firm with extensive experience in parks and recreation development. The company will provide design, architecture and project management services for two existing Dayton recreation centers the Lohrey Recreation Center (2366 Glenarm Avenue) and Northwest Recreation Center (1600 Princeton Drive). Both centers are slated for major renovations and expansion, with completion of construction estimated for May of 2008.
Construction contracts will be awarded at a later date.
Dayton City Manager Rashad Young said this commitment of City resources will provide positive returns for decades to come: Recreation is just one of the ways the City of Dayton is investing in our neighborhoods to ensure their long-term livability.
