The Department of Recreation and Youth Services holds monthly karate classes through SWAT Karate for adults and youth at the Ellison Center, Tuesday and Friday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Northwest Center, Tuesday and Wednesday 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and Westwood Center, Monday and Wednesday 7:00 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. Participants compete in monthly tournaments around the area including: Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee. Our SWAT Karate participants competed in the Scott Wrenn 3rd Annual Karate Championship in White House, TN Saturday, June 6, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The 350 competitors were a combination of ages from 6 to 60 who practice six hours a week.
We are excited to announce Steven Allen and Dr. Roger Haines coached our students to victory with winners including:
- Shawn Muhammad, age 17, black belt 1st fighting 2nd forms.
- Destiny Brown, age 12, orange belt 1st fighting 3rd forms.
- Royal Muhammad, age 15, black belt 3rd fighting 3rd forms.
- Bryan Jones, age 10, orange belt 2nd fighting 4th forms.
- Lewis Perry, age 18, black belt 4th forms.
- Tristan Miller, age 18, black belt 3rd fighting.
- Cayelin Richarson, age 12, blue belt 1st fighting 2nd forms.
Our 400 spectators made it out to watch their family and friends compete. After hard work and numerous hours put into practicing, The City’s SWAT Karate team made it to Nationals this past weekend of June 13, 2009. Special thanks to the coaches for their efforts and dedication to their students. Region 8 National Karate Championship will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Northwest Recreation Center.
